Niki Messmore has served as the Coordinator for Civic Engagement since July 2014. In this role, she primarily manages the Alternative Break program and other programs on active citizenship. The Alternative Break program includes 10-12 student leaders in the Alternative Break Scholarship program who annually plan 10 trip experiences focusing on different social issues. Recently Niki was named ‘Staff Person of the Year’ by the national alternative breaks organization Break Away. Additional responsibilities to support civic engagement at IUPUI include supervising student leaders who plan programs on voter registration and education.
Niki worked for five years in service-learning and nonprofit administration prior to attending graduate school, including time as an AmeriCorps member serving as the director of Teen Central at Bowling Green State University, as a community organizer, at the United Way, and at a midwest Latino Resource Center. She is dedicated to mutually beneficial service-learning opportunities that listen to community voice, support student development, center social justice, and contribute to the public good. In order to generate educationally meaningful experiences, Niki continues in her work as a scholar-practitioner who utilizes theory and research to design curriculum and programs.
