CAPS Commitment to Inclusivity and Social Justice
IUPUI’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) maintains strong commitments to providing clinical services that are culturally informed and sensitive, and to promoting social justice within the campus community.
The identities of IUPUI students are complex and diverse. We will strive to provide programs and services that are inclusive and affirming. We invite you to share your story in a safe space where you will be heard, valued, accepted, and appreciated for the intersection of identities and experiences that are uniquely YOURS.
Many in our campus community experience trauma as a result of discrimination, oppression, and injustice. This magnifies daily stressors and leads to distrust and isolation. We will respect your boundaries, listen to your concerns, and trust in the relationships we can build.
We believe that everyone benefits when we actively encourage awareness, respect, equality, equity, understanding, and appreciation for the multitude of identities and backgrounds that make up our communities. By making a commitment to these critical values, we hope to enhance our empathy for individual differences, confront stereotypes and biases, and serve as important advocates for social justice.
As health care professionals, CAPS’ staff have foundational training in multicultural competencies. We know that is not enough. We are committed to ongoing training and self-reflection in order to best serve all of the individuals on our campus.
There will always be more for us to learn. If you have comments or concerns about our statement or our services, please share them with us in the space provided below.
There can be no vulnerability without risk; there can be no community without vulnerability; there can be no peace and ultimately no life, without community. - M. Scott Peck
