Counseling & Psychological Services
Fees for Services
Only students granted enrollment to IUPUI and actively engaged in coursework are eligible for CAPS’ services. Students who have been admitted to the university may initiate counseling services prior to the first day of classes by providing documentation of registration for classes in the upcoming semester. There will be no distinction in service provision based on credit hour enrollment.
Students who are not enrolled in summer classes, or are taking a leave from the university for no more than one semester remain eligible for CAPS’ services.
- Graduate and professional (Dental, Law, Medical) students are eligible for CAPS’ services.
- Medical students will be made aware of the Medical School Mental Health/Behavioral Health Counseling Services as an additional resource; these services are provided by Suzanne Kunkle, PhD, HSPP at IUPUI Campus Health, Coleman Hall 100, 278-8214. http://msa.medicine.iu.edu/studentdevelopment/counseling/personalcounseling
- Medical residents and postdoctoral fellows are considered employees of the University and not eligible for CAPS’ services; they will be referred to the Medical School or EAP.
- Dental fellows and residents are considered students by the University, and therefore, are eligible for CAPS’ services.
In order to facilitate continuity of care, if therapeutically indicated, CAPS will continue to provide counseling services to graduating students that have been engaged in services for an extended period of time while enrolled at IUPUI. Graduates may receive services for one semester (~4 months) following degree completion and will be charged at the same rate as enrolled students. The focus of treatment during that time will be related to the termination of counseling or the transfer of services to a community provider.
Students seeking to establish counseling services within 2-4 weeks of graduation will be seen for assessment and stabilization of symptoms. Additional sessions will focus on referral to a community provider as indicated.
Psychiatric services will be discontinued within 6 months of degree completion.
We recognize that personal and academic concerns may result in a student taking a break from classes. As stated above, students who are not enrolled in summer classes, or are taking a leave from the university for no more than one semester remain eligible for CAPS’ services.
CAPS will continue to provide services for a limited time to ongoing clients that are no longer pursuing a degree at IUPUI. Services will be extended no more than the equivalent of one academic semester (~4 months) and the focus of sessions will be on termination of counseling services or transfer to a community provider.
Psychiatric services will be discontinued within 6 months after the last semester enrolled.
Non-students will be seen for crisis, stabilization, and referral only. Faculty, staff, and campus visitors will not be charged for such services.
Non-student employees of IUPUI may contact the Employee Assistance Program for counseling and mental health services.
Payment in full is expected at the time of service. IUPUI CAPS accepts payment by cash, check, credit card, or billing to a student’s University (bursar) account. Students will receive a monthly notification of any unpaid balances for counseling and testing services. These charges will be billed to the individual’s University account when 60 days past due. Charges for missed medication management appointments will be billed to the individual’s University account if unpaid after 30 days.
In the event a payment needs to be refunded, the refund must be given in the exact same manner the original payment was received (cash, check, credit card, Bursar). It may take up to 2-4 weeks for a refund to be processed and received.
All individuals engaged in counseling services (group, individual, relationship) will be assessed a $15 fee at the time services are initiated. This fee covers the assessment session and referral to appropriate mode(s) of treatment. Assessment Fees are not subject to sliding scale reductions, but may be paid over time.
Clients returning from a break in services of >4 months will also be charged the Assessment Fee of $15 in order to re-establish services.
There is no charge for group counseling sessions. However, an Assessment Fee is required prior to engaging in group counseling. Brief screening sessions for specific group participation will be performed at no charge. Group sessions will be 50 - 90 minutes in length, depending on the nature of the group.
Individual Counseling Sessions
Each student is eligible for 6 free individual counseling sessions during their career at IUPUI. Intake and assessment sessions are not counted as part of these free sessions. Subsequent to utilization of 6 individual counseling sessions, a fee of $10 will be assessed for each 50-minute session. A prorated fee may be assessed when shorter sessions are indicated for therapeutic purposes, but not to compensate for client lateness.
In cases where the charge for individual counseling is prohibitive, an application for fee reduction may be completed. This application must include verification of income and the session fee will be determined from a schedule based on the Taxable Income and Number of Dependents reported on the Federal Income Tax Form 1040, FAFSA, or recent pay stub. Documentation for fee adjustments will be submitted to the Director for determination. Eligibility for fee reductions will be reviewed in July of each year.
Relationship Counseling Sessions
The Assessment Fee of $15 per person applies to relationship intake sessions. Relationship counseling sessions are typically 50-minutes length, but may be increased to 80-minutes based on the discretion of the counselor. A fee of $15 per person will be assessed for each session, for a total charge of $30 per session. Relationship counseling session fees are not subject to sliding scale reductions or free session allotments.
Psychoeducational Evaluations and Testing
Psychoeducational evaluation and testing will be provided for IUPUI students based on the eligibility requirements described above. An Evaluation Fee of $30 is due at the time of the initial Evaluation interview. A non-refundable deposit is required prior to initiating testing sessions. The cost for a complete evaluation is typically $300-$600, depending on the specific tests required.
Students with financial need may seek funding for testing services through their academic unit, or may apply for a fee supplement through CAPS as funds are available.
Psychiatric Medication Management
Psychiatric services are provided at IUPUI CAPS through contract with an independent psychiatrist. Fees for psychiatric services include $55 for initial intake session and $40 for medication management appointments. These fees are greatly discounted compared to community based providers due to allotments from the General Services Fee. Fees for Psychiatric Services are not subject to fee reductions and payment is due at the time of services.
Due to the high demand and limited availability of psychiatric services at CAPS, students will be charged for missed appointments. Full fees will be charged for missed appointments not cancelled at least 24-hours in advance. Fees not paid within 30-days will be billed to the student’s University (bursar) account. Multiple missed appointments may result in termination of services. Fees for missed appointments may be appealed in writing, with appeals submitted to the Director for review and approval or denial.
Psychoeducational seminars will be provided at no cost.
