Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a more successful existence (National Wellness Institute).
Health Promotion is the process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve their health. It moves beyond a focus on individual behavior towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions (World Health Organization).
Health promotion serves the core mission of higher education by supporting students and creating healthy and safe learning environments.
The Office of Health and Wellness Promotion began operations in Fall 2014 drawing from staff previously working in related education and prevention efforts from other areas within the Division of Student Affairs. Under the new designation, HWP operated out of the IUPUI Campus Center and Walker Plaza as a virtual office with decentralized work spaces. The office became whole with the addition of a Director in Summer 2015, and the office became one with the relocation of offices to a unified space in Fall 2016.
