Dear Students,

After careful consideration, the university has determined that it is in the best interest of the campus community to suspend face-to-face classes for the rest of the spring semester at IUPUI. As someone who has worked with college students for decades, I know how upsetting this must be for you to have such an interruption in your lives. I also understand that my own colleagues in Student Affairs and across IUPUI will be affected deeply by your absence, will miss your energy and spirit on campus, and will be doing all they can to help you continue your academic progress.

Our goal is to ensure your safety, and this requires that we work to eliminate or minimize—to the best of our ability—situations that bring people into close contact. We know that safety, in this case, will require sacrifice and cooperation on all of our parts. What one does impacts all of us. It’s in the nature of our campus community to support and care for others, and I count on you to live that value as you work together to make the best of this difficult situation.

The latest updates resulting from the university’s decision follow:

Schedule:

• Extended Spring Break: We will be extending spring break by one week. Classes will resume online on March 30 to provide additional time for faculty to prepare for and make the transition to online teaching.
  • Faculty and staff are doing all that they can to ensure that your education will continue with minimal interruption and understand that this is especially important for those of you nearing graduation.
  • According to the latest information, IU Fort Wayne students will be resuming classes online on March 23.
• Currently, the published final exam schedule is in effect. If there are changes to this schedule, you will receive advance notice.

Online Learning:

Upon return from extended spring break on March 30, courses will continue to take place at their regularly scheduled times, but faculty are aware that some of you may now be in different time zones around the world. Whenever possible, they will be videotaping classes and uploading content so that it is available online.

Residence Halls at IUPUI:

• As you have seen, Indiana University has decided to close most residence halls.
• As a result, IUPUI’s on-campus housing will be closed, with limited exceptions, for the duration of the spring 2020 semester. 
• If you have already left campus, go or stay home. Do not return to campus.
  • Please do not return to campus at this time if you have another place to live for the remainder of the semester.
• If you are still on campus and can do so, please return to your permanent place of residence.
  • Students who remained in campus housing for spring break and have another place to go must move out of campus housing by Friday, March 20.
• If you have no place to go, file a petition to stay.
  • If you do not have a permanent residence outside of your residence hall or campus-controlled housing, or cannot return to your home country, and need to petition to stay on campus during the shift to remote learning, please complete the survey at this link: https://iu.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_73CfSL6nXTlvXKt.
• Housing and Residence Life has reached out with further information about the move-out process, including arrangements to pick up essential items like medical equipment, scheduling appointments to retrieve belongings, and other matters.

International students:

 Please consult with the Office of International Affairs if you have questions about visa-related matters.  If you are an international graduate student engaged in research, consult with your program’s graduate advisor and faculty mentors to discuss continuing your research and decisions as to whether you need to leave the US. 

Available services at IUPUI

• University Library and Computer Labs: University Library and Computer Labs will remain open, but with limited hours (University Library: Monday – Friday: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Computer Labs: hours depend on location). Facilities will be monitored to ensure adherence to social distancing practices.
  • Students at IUPUC and IU Fort Wayne should check the library and computer lab schedules for their hours of operation.
  • IUPUI Campus Health, specifically the Coleman Hall Clinic, will remain open.
  • Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will remain open.
  • Adaptive Educational Services will remain available.
  • The IUPUI Campus Center will remain open with non-essential spaces such as the game room unavailable.
  • Food Service on campus – The locations of food service on campus can be found at: https://www.dineoncampus.com/iupui/.  
  • For IUPUC and IU Fort Wayne students, campus leaders will follow up with an update on available services. 

Spring Events:

All events will be cancelled for the remainder of the semester, including Jagapalooza, the Chancellor’s Academic Honors Convocation, and affinity graduations (i.e., Celebration of Black Graduates and Lavender Graduation). We understand that this is disappointing, but we will be working as a campus community to recognize and honor your achievements.

Commencement, summer programs and events:

The university is actively reviewing commencement as well as summer programs and events. You will be notified when a decision has been made.
