Brian Starkel is the assistant director for leadership development and civic engagement, where he oversees professional staff members and graduate assistants in two functional areas that serve the campus through alternative breaks, Freedom Rides, the Advancing Women Mentoring Program, Community Leaders of Tomorrow, cultural leadership reflection, and political engagement. He serves the campus in the development of on-demand leadership programs for student organizations and fostering partnerships to promote active citizenship across academic disciplines.

Prior to his role as assistant director, Starkel served IUPUI as the coordinator for student programming, where he oversaw the operations of the Game Room and Cultural Arts Gallery and ushered in a variety of new programming and partnerships for the campus. He additionally served as the advisor for the Student Activities Programming Board (SAPB), which was named the 2016 NACA Mid-America Organization of the Year. Prior to joining the Campus Center and Student Experiences staff, Starkel served as the director of student activities at Defiance College in Defiance, Ohio.
