IUPUI Fraternity and Sorority Life has added a fifth Multicultural Greek organization to its community -- Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc. (DKD), a historically South Asian organization that will begin its first year of operation in 2020-21.

“The addition of DKD will impact the Multicultural Greek Council by adding a different culturally-based perspective to the ever-growing council and community,” said Jayson Davis, coordinator of fraternity and sorority life. “This is also IUPUI’s second organization associated with the National APIDA Panhellenic Association, the other being Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc.”

Nijal Desai will serve as the organization’s president, and Riya Patel will serve as vice president. Desai and Patel, along with Mona Bhattari and Krishna Patel, are the four founding members of the group and shared a desire to give back to the community. The group was officially founded in November 2019.

The organization is service-based with a focus on child abuse awareness and prevention. In addition, DKD will put a premium on its members’ education, along with children’s education throughout the city.

“DKD is the only South Asian-based sorority at IUPUI, and bringing that diversity to campus is important because there is a large Indian community here,” said Riya Patel. “We are proud of our culture and want to shine light on it.”

“It is important to our office that IUPUI students see themselves in our organizations and that students can truly find a brotherhood or sisterhood in these nationally affiliated, Greek-lettered groups,” said Davis.

Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc. will begin operations in August when students return to campus.
