Campus Recreation provides in-person, virtual activities

By:

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, plenty of changes have come across IUPUI’s campus, and while the need to work out hasn’t changed, how IUPUI students, staff and faculty engage in working out has. Changing with the times, IUPUI Campus Recreation is providing both in-person and virtual activities throughout the year.

With additional rules, regulations and sign-up spots compared to past years, see below for a handy guide on everything you need to know to stay in shape this year.

The Jag

The Jaguar Campus Recreation fitness facility in the Campus Center is open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., but students should make note that the facility is closed from 2 to 3 p.m. for cleaning. The Jag is also open on Saturday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Due to a 25 percent reduction in capacity in The Jag, it is requested that students make a reservation for their workout time.

Open recreation

Due to COVID-19, The Jungle is not available for drop-in recreation. The CROF is limited to six people per basketball court for drop-in recreation.

Intramurals

Intramural sports are taking place this fall and winter. Currently, cornhole, kickball, softball and women’s sand volleyball are open for registration. Students can register for all leagues online.

Club sports

Club sports will be encouraged to operate but must abide by IU guidance on outdoor activities, physical distancing and student organization guidelines. You can check out club sports on The Spot.

Group workouts

Several different types of group workouts are offered both in-person and virtual this semester and all of them can be found at rec.iupui.edu. Students can see which classes are in-person or virtual before registering. All in-person classes have a very limited capacity, so each class is also live streamed and must be signed up for as well. Once a student signs up for an online class, a link for the stream will be emailed to them. Special events are also listed, such as Moonlight Yoga on Oct. 21.

Natatorium

Open swim at the Natatorium is available Monday through Friday 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. Campus Recreation does not control the hours, so it is encouraged to check the monthly calendar on the Natatorium’s website.

NIFS

Access to the National Institute for Sports and Fitness is available as part of the Campus Recreation fee. Once students have paid their fee, NIFS can be reached at 317-274-3432 to set up an appointment to activate the membership. NIFS’ hours are 5 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m.–5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Participants are required to wear masks in all of the facilities and in-person programs including drop-in outdoor recreation. All hours are subject to change and updates can be found online.

Registration, sign-ups, membership purchases and more can be accomplished by visiting rec.iupui.edu.
