2022 spring semester highlights

By:

In the blink of an eye, another semester has come to an end. From January to May, the IUPUI community took part in numerous activities like raising money, winning awards and staying active. Here’s a look back at campus life’s spring semester highlights.

Spotted Campaign

The Spotted at IUPUI campaign was created to showcase the unique stories of our students, faculty and staff and how they have found their spot on campus – whether that’s through student organizations, academics, sports or the overall IUPUI community. Since January, seven students and five IUPUI employees told their stories of what it means to be a Jaguar.

Student Living

This semester, there were 64 RAs across University Tower, North Hall, Ball Hall and Riverwalk. The Residence Hall Association hosted 11 events with an estimated attendance of 800 students. Students could also choose to live in one of the 14 Residential Based Learning Communities (RBLC) offered, where they got to connect with students who shared the same major or similar interests.

Jaguar Roller Skating Party
(March 8, 2022)

Due to COVID-19, the start to the spring semester was unexpected. As cases spiked during winter break, IUPUI had to make the tough decision to cancel Week of Welcome in January to keep the IUPUI community safe.

But this little hiccup didn’t keep campus life down. Once IUPUI deemed it safe, Student and Family Connections was able to host a Jaguar Roller Skating Party – which was originally planned during Week of Welcome. Dozens of students showed up to the Campus Center to get their skate on with glow in the dark roller skating!

Jagathon
(March 26, 2022)

At their first in-person event since 2020, the student-run Jagathon team raised over $364,000 in donations for Riley Hospital for Children. The 15-hour dance marathon consisted of playing fun games, spending time with kids and families supported by Jagathon and lots of dancing. Over the last 20 years, Jagathon has almost raised $3 million dollars thanks to the fundraising efforts of IUPUI students!

IU Day
(April 20, 2022)

In the worldwide event honoring Indiana University and the people who make IU possible, over $5,000 was raised for the Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC). With these funds, the CRC can provide 10 students in recovery with a $500 scholarship this fall.

Awards
(April 2022)

Each year, IUPUI honors 100 outstanding undergraduate students and 50 graduate and professional students who demonstrate excellence in academics, campus leadership and community engagement. IUPUI’s 2022 Most Outstanding Student, Caleb Shannon, also led this year’s Jagathon.

Additionally, 11 students received Women’s History Month awards for demonstrating significant leadership, achievement, advocacy or service in support of gender equity, women’s empowerment, women’s history or cultures of inclusion.

Safer Sex Supplies

IUPUI students have access to free sexual health products through the Safer Sex Supplies program – formerly known as the Condom Club. This spring was the program’s most successful semester ever with almost 250 visits, which includes grab-and-go boxes, special orders and mail orders. During the 2021–22 academic year, Health and Wellness Promotion distributed more than 9,000 free products to students.

Intramurals and Club Sports

In the spring, 498 students participated in intramurals, with 5v5 indoor basketball and indoor volleyball being the most popular sports.

Over Memorial Day weekend, the Women’s Rugby Club team will be competing in the Collegiate Rugby Nationals against 28 other teams from around the nation. This is the first time the team has qualified for nationals since it was founded in 2020.

Jagapalooza
(April 26, 2022)

One of IUPUI’s favorite traditions was back on campus and better than ever. This outdoor mini carnival drew in nearly 3,800 attendees who got to enjoy 11 different attractions to celebrate the end of the semester. This year-end bash was overseen by IUPUI’s Student Activities Programming Board (SAPB).

Congratulations to the class of 2022! Thanks, Jags, for another fun-filled semester.
