Being from a small town in southern Indiana, college was advertised but not considered necessary for many. College was always on my radar, but it didn't stick out to me until junior year of high school. My parents didn't attend college, which put me in the dark with the application process, understanding different terms and figuring out where I wanted to go to in the end.
As a STEM major on the pre-med track, there was a lot that needed to be thought out before I arrived at college, which my parents were lost on. Other family members, guidance counselors and friends in the same boat were my biggest aids in sorting through what was needed to even be accepted.
Navigating freshman year
"This is terrifying," was my thought when I first visited IU Indianapolis. It's a frightening time, being a senior in high school and wrapping up the life you had lived for the past 13 years, trying to focus on paperwork and forms to be submitted for college applications. The past and the future are fighting for attention, while the present is flying past, gone in the blink of an eye.
Fast forward, I am now in my second semester of freshman year, which is crazy enough to say. Freshman life, here at IUI, focuses on a smooth transition to being a college student. IUI was a quick and easy decision for me to make for my future because of the location, opportunities, degree pathways and so much more that only one can experience here.
