Embracing challenges: The international and first-gen student experience
As an international student and the first in my family to attend a four-year college, my journey to IU Indianapolis was marked by a blend of excitement and responsibility. Coming from a diverse background and being the eldest sibling, I had to make the complex decision of selecting a university that not only offered excellent academic opportunities, but was also financially viable. I sought a place where I could thrive academically, professionally and personally.
A blend of opportunity and affordability
The moment I received my acceptance into the Honors College as an International Plater Scholar, my decision was clear. This scholarship, coupled with a study abroad stipend, made the university an irresistible choice. As the only international student to receive this award, I felt a deep sense of responsibility to give back. This motivated me to get involved in multiple student organizations, as well as volunteer at Regatta, Greening IUPUI, SAPB Weeks of Welcome and TEDx IUPUI.
Furthermore, the university's vibrant multicultural environment resonated with my own diverse background, making it the perfect setting for my academic adventure. Lastly, choosing Computer Science as my major, positioned in the bustling downtown of Indianapolis, opened up a world of opportunities. The proximity to numerous companies and startups provided an ideal landscape for practical learning and career development, aligning perfectly with my ambitions.
