There are several ways to be a part of IU Indianapolis’s homecoming event. You can apply to be on Regatta Royalty for a chance at a scholarship, sign up your pup for the dog costume contest, volunteer for academic credit, judge a contest, or be a part of the general board.

Register for the Regatta
Canoe wait to race on the canal? We sure can’t.
Race day registration will open in August 2024. Teams can be comprised of four to six people—four races and two handlers—and race in the men’s, women’s, or co-ed division. The cost to register your team is less than $200.
Regatta Royalty
Regatta Royalty is an esteemed and highly sought-after title that many students consider a significant achievement. Students crowned as Regatta Royalty receive a $500 scholarship, and those named to the court spend Regatta Week—the week leading up to race day and the festival—participating in various activities.
Application requirements:
- Enrolled in the fall 2024 semester as an IU Indianapolis student
- Have completed a minimum of 26 credit hours
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0
Applications will open in August 2024.
Join the Steering Committee
The Regatta is planned and organized by a body of students—the Regatta Steering Committee. Through this experience, you will gain hands-on, real-world experiences you can apply to a variety of career paths. Teamwork, collaboration, budget/finance management, project management, event planning, marketing, social media, and more are all skills you can develop by planning the Regatta.
- Must be enrolled as an IU Indianapolis student for the duration of their tenure in the position.
- It is an expectation of all committee members to be a part of the team for 10 months (January-October).
- Committee members will be required to attend bi-weekly meetings throughout the spring semester and summer and weekly committee meetings beginning in August leading up to Regatta.
- All applicants are expected to maintain a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA and exhibit a high level of professionalism.
- All committee members will be working with programs such as Microsoft Outlook, Google Drive, and GroupMe in order to achieve successful communication throughout the coordination of the IUPUI Regatta.
- All position descriptions below indicate the responsibilities of each committee member.
- Committee members will also be expected to complete a certain number of volunteer hours outside of their position descriptions to help advance the event (e.g., tabling).
- It is essential to understand that your responsibilities may not be limited to the following descriptions, as the IUPUI Regatta is continually growing and changing.
- Finally, be aware that all committee members work together as a team and overlap in their responsibilities for the entire year's process.
Executive Director
- Serves as the responsible student leader for both IU Indianapolis and the Indianapolis communities
- Directs and oversees the entire IU Indianapolis Regatta Steering Committee
- Leads biweekly (spring) and weekly (summer) committee meetings, oversees progress, and reports to IU Indianapolis constituent groups
- Works closely with the Division of Student Affairs, the Office of Alumni Relations, the IU Alumni Association, the Alumni Council, and is an advisor on the progress of the Steering Committee as a whole
- Serves as the student representative of the Regatta
- Works closely with the Executive Board and is an advisor to oversee the work of the entire committee and maintain progress
- Must have previously held a position on the Regatta Steering Committee for at least one year
- Must be knowledgeable on all aspects of Regatta and willing to devote a large amount of time to the planning of the IU Indianapolis Regatta
Associate Executive Director of Administration
- Is responsible for overseeing all sponsorship and financial aspects of the Regatta, along with partnerships with other campus organizations
- Oversees and advises the Director of Sponsorships and the Coordinator of Sponsor Operations
- Assists in the process of securing internal and external sponsorships
- Assists in the communication between the Regatta Steering Committee and other campus organizations
- Must have previously held a position on the Regatta Steering Committee for at least one year
- Works closely with the Executive Board and the advisor to oversee the work of the entire committee and maintain progress
- Must be knowledgeable on all aspects of Regatta and willing to devote a large amount of time to the planning of the IU Indianapolis Regatta
Associate Executive Director of Communications
- Is responsible for overseeing all aspects of marketing and communications involving the Regatta
- Oversees and advises the Coordinator of Social Media and Design and the Director of Public Relations
- Assists in the process of creating a marketing plan for the Regatta and develops strategies to increase engagement and attendance at events
- Organizes information and events that needs to be marketed and oversees campus and community outreach
- Must have previously held a position on the Regatta Steering Committee for at least one year
- Works closely with the Executive Board and the advisor to oversee the work of the entire committee and maintain progress
- Must be knowledgeable on all aspects of Regatta and willing to devote a large amount of time to the planning of the IU Indianapolis Regatta
Associate Executive Director of Internal Affairs
- Is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the race prior to and on race day, and additionally oversees event volunteer recruitment and organization
- Oversees and advises the Co-Directors of Rules and Teams, Director of Volunteers, and Coordinator of Volunteers
- Helps to organize race timeline and set up the canal/canoes for the Regatta and other related events
- Assists in the process of volunteer sign-ups and organizing shift structures
- Must have previously held a position on the Regatta Steering Committee for at least one year
- Works closely with the Executive Board and the advisor to oversee the work of the entire committee and maintain progress
- Must be knowledgeable on all aspects of Regatta and willing to devote a large amount of time to the planning of the IU Indianapolis Regatta
Associate Executive Director of External Affairs
- Is responsible for overseeing all external aspects of the Regatta including vendors, stage and festival management, and Regatta Royalty
- Oversees and advises the Director of Festival, Coordinator of Contests, and Coordinator of Traditions
- Assists in the process of securing food trucks, carnival rides, and other vendors that make up the festival portion of the event
- Helps to plan events such as performances and other contests that occur on stage at the festival, as well as Regatta Royalty events
- Must have previously held a position on the Regatta Steering Committee for at least one year
- Works closely with the Executive Board and the advisor to oversee the work of the entire committee and maintain progress
- Must be knowledgeable on all aspects of Regatta and willing to devote a large amount of time to the planning of the IU Indianapolis Regatta
Director of Rules and Teams (2)
- Directs and oversees the Coordinator of Equipment
- Oversees all race-related activities throughout the year and during the event
- Organizes team-member orientation
- Plans and oversees team practice day(s)
- Reviews, updates, and publishes the official race rules packet for the Regatta
Director of Sponsorships
- Directs and oversees the Coordinator of Donations
- Identifies and secures financial sponsorships from campus partners including on-campus offices and schools
- Corresponds with internal sponsors throughout the entire planning process
- Ensures all agreements with internal sponsors are upheld
- Coordinates the placement of internal sponsors in the Campus Commons for the day of Regatta
- Serves as sponsor point of contact at the event
- Must be articulate and organized
Director of Public Relations
- Directs and oversees the Coordinator of Social Media, the Coordinator of Graphic Design, and the Coordinator of Media Communications
- Works with the Division of Student Affairs, University Communications and Marketing, outside companies, and news media (including media sponsors) to further promote the Regatta around the Indianapolis community
- Develops and updates a communications plan (including strategy, goals, and tactics)
- Creates content for press releases, articles, and presentations (for internal and external use)
- Ensures all marketing language and design is consistent, and assists in building brand awareness for Regatta
- Works to develop good community relations
Director of Festival
- Directs and oversees the Coordinator of Contests, the Coordinator of Traditions, and the Coordinator of Arts and Culture Fair
- Secures festival entertainment for the event
- Corresponds with entertainment vendors throughout the entire planning process
- Oversees the entire festival area during event, including setup and teardown
Director of Volunteers
- Manages the online volunteer registration process with assistance from the Division of Student Affairs
- Creates a volunteer schedule based on volunteers’ chosen shifts
- Oversees the Regatta Steering Committee general board
- Acts as a liaison with the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and athlete participation during Regatta
- Develops efficient communication methods and incentives for volunteers
- Schedules, updates, and leads the volunteer orientations
- Directs all volunteers the day of setup and race day
Coordinator of Sponsorship Operations
- Identifies and secures financial sponsorships from campus partners including on-campus offices and schools
- Serve as the liaison to the Alumni Office and associated partners with Regatta Week, such as Battleships (Jagathon) and Flick N’ Float (SAPB)
- Submit orders and financial transaction forms for all non-contract purchases
- Coordinates the placement of the sponsors for the day of Regatta
- Serves as the main point of contact for internal sponsors throughout the entire planning process
- Works with the team to research, employ, and manage all forms of fundraising for the Stefan S. Davis Regatta Scholarship fund
Coordinator of Volunteers
- Assists the Director of Vendors with identifying vendors for Regatta
- Manages volunteer registration process and volunteer orientations
- Develops volunteer schedules and shifts based on committee needs
- Coordinates all volunteers the day of setup and race day
- Serves at the committee point of contact at the Command Tent during Regatta
Coordinator of Social Media and Design
- Develops the IU Indianapolis Regatta social media plan
- Manages the official Regatta Instagram account; creates content for other social platforms and shares with Student Affairs Marketing and Communications for publishing
- Develops new electronic methods to market the event to the campus and community
- Works closely with all committee members to develop targeted marketing campaigns and secure engaging content
- Posts and engages on all social media outlets
- Serves as the main social media correspondent for the day of Regatta
Coordinator of Traditions
- Develops the Regatta Court timeline
- Organizes all aspects of the Regatta court, including application, interviews, orientation, and selection process
- Secures materials for the Regatta court and Regatta Royalty, including crowns, sashes, etc.
- Serve as the liaison to Student and Family Connections for the Family Meet and Greet during the Regatta
- Execute the scholarship paperwork for Regatta Royalty winners
- Coordinate the appearances of Regatta Court, IU Indianapolis Mascots, cheerleaders, and serve as the main contact for IU and IU Indianapolis administrative appearances
Coordinator of Contests
- Organizes the Dog Costume Contest, Tug of War, and Cardboard Boat Race
- Researches and employs contests that add to Regatta festivities
- Updates registration and rules of existing Regatta contests and assigns prizes for each contest winner
- Oversees all aspects of Regatta contests
- Serve as the primary master of ceremonies for contests and race award presentations
Regatta general board
By joining the general board, you will develop as a leader, create long-lasting campus connections, and gain real-world experiences. Becoming a general board member will require professionalism, a positive attitude, and attendance to monthly meetings. Through your involvement, you will serve on various teams as we all prepare for IU Indianapolis’s signature event.
We aim to best match your skills with the areas where help is needed most. Some areas/tasks you may be asked to help with include:
- Reaching students through tabling and self-promoting the event
- Posting social media content on all platforms for Regatta
- Planning and executing Fall Regatta Week
- Recruiting volunteers for various aspects of the Regatta
- Contributing your point of view and helping guide overall strategy

You can lend a hand on practice day, setup day, or race and festival day. All volunteers will receive a complimentary T-shirt, delicious food, and confirmation of your volunteer hours for any scholarship or academic requirements you have.
